Four weeks into the new administration of our federal government — steeped as it is in an old, dying, almost-dead consciousness that gorges itself on force, fascism, racism, domination, subjugation, untruth, unfairness, unseriousness, un-Americanism, judgment, misogyny, White supremacy, anti-democracy, patriarchy, oligarchy and all that goes with all of that — and the entity best positioned to lead us to what’s next seems incapable because it, too, is largely rooted in the old consciousness.
Democrats and Republicans have, for decades, supplanted the idea of an American government of, by, and for the people with a government of, by, and for the corporations wherein we the people fight for the scraps, often against each other.
Both parties have allowed our American citizenry to become ignorant of what our system of government actually is, how it works, and, oh the horror, what responsibilities we have as citizens. To wit:
13 states have no civics course requirements
only 7 out of 38 states that require a civics course in high school mandate a full year of study
fewer than 25% of U.S. eighth-graders performed at or above proficiency level on the recent National Assessment of Progress (NAEP) exam in civics1
more than 70% of Americans fail a basic civics literacy quiz on topics like the three branches of government and the number of Supreme Court justices
It’s extremely easy to flout the rule of law when so few know what the rule of law is.
In addition to all the old consciousness and all the ignorance is a degree of fear in the body politic unlike anything we have ever experienced. For example, this top-line comports with what I’ve seen in my own practice during the last decade or so: Americans are afraid of more things than they used to be; are more afraid of those things than they used to be; and the number of issues feared by more than half of us has risen steadily. “These findings suggest a significant and widespread increase in fear and anxiety among Americans, spanning various aspects of life including government, personal safety, and economic concerns.” Now say it with me, conscious politics practitioner: none of us make good decisions when we marinate in fear and anxiety.
For the Democratic Party to do what is necessary to counter the federal government currently taking hold in America and lead it to what’s next, it must do precisely what the Republican Party has done: utterly and completely transform itself from whatever it has been into something else entirely — or go the way of the dodo. Will they? Early indications are…not likely, not yet anyway (but I’m standing at the ready with myriad proposals when they are).
…here are some “new rules”/reminders to keep top of mind. The best part is, they are everyday practice for us:
To be sure, the Republicans had it easy. There was enough old consciousness, ignorance, and fear at their disposal to make the transformation from conservative to anti-democratic in reasonably short order. The Democratic Party — or whatever it may transform into — doesn’t have an answer right now because it lacks enough new consciousness in its ranks (and beyond) to do what’s necessary to create what’s next. So let’s cultivate gobs of new consciousness, people, starting with a belief. If you are seeing more darkness in the world it’s because there is also more Light. Those political dust bunnies, grime, and mold have been festering for hundreds of years. They are not pretty yet they must be seen in order to be transformed. When you believe this to be true, you’ll see more and more evidence of more and more Light.
Additionally, here are some “new rules”/reminders to keep top of mind. The best part is, they are everyday practice for us:
Know that fear, dread, worry, anxiety, doubt, hopelessness, despair, anger, uncertainty and the like literally feed the monster of old consciousness you abhor. Everything is energy and we are all connected so any one of us who actually transforms our fear, anxiety and the like into alignment with what’s desired, drains lifeforce from the aforementioned old, dying, almost-dead consciousness. Starve it!
To starve — not fight — the old consciousness, we get ultra, super clear about what we want and articulate it with aplomb. We believe what we want is possible. We shine klieg lights on every bit of every example there is of what we want that already exists, wherever it may be. And we do all of this because the law of attraction is always on and because intentions and beliefs really, truly matter.
Do not look to the past for guidance about creating conscious politics.
Remember that whatever is on the news has already been created. It’s done. To be present is to accept, not judge, not resist, not fight…what is. But if what is, is other than what’s wanted, best practice is to springboard to and focus upon that. Plant that seed. Set that intention.
Do not, under any circumstances, rely solely on corporate media to be your only source of news and information. Their interests are not your interests in spite of the fact that many of their employees are journalists of high integrity and produce quality work. Diversify. Seek new, independent voices, rely upon specific trusted sources and make sure some of them are new to you.
Listen for and to the belief systems of people and stop arguing with anyone whose beliefs do not comport with what you’d like to see.
To recap:
The Light is winning. Look for evidence of it.
Don’t fight the old consciousness, starve it.
Resist nothing.
Know what you want and how to say it.
Know what you believe.
Do not allow corporate/legacy media to be your only source(s) of news and information.
Diversify your news and information portfolio.
We need everyone who does not support the policies, proposals, and actions of the new (old) administration to be about the business of cultivating what’s next. I think that includes you.
These are excellent subjects to bring to this month’s Conscious Politics Free Monthly Training, which will take place this Tuesday, February 18.
It will start at 5:00pm PST/8:00pm EST and we usually go for up to 90 minutes.
If you’ve signed up or attended in the past, you’ll receive email reminders with the Zoom link on Tuesday.

Committee For Economic Development Policy Backgrounder: The State of Civics Education in the U.S. (September, 2023)
Excellent Steven!
Thank you for this presentation!
There’s a lot of wok ahead!
Wish us all luck!
New consciousness must be useful, not just new. Neither of the American duopoly parties hold actual new consciousness; they cannot, because consciousness is individual and personal, not some aggregation or average of all participants. Actual new consciousness is looking away from those old tired wineskins towards new non-plastic containers for Power, not Force. The Second American Revolution has begun, and the Second American Civil War is already being fought. How do we rise above the fray? That’s where the real action is.
